An original release is the first production run of a given blend and year, built from the leaf a blender selected for that exact batch. A secondary batch carries the same name forward but not always the same leaf. Fermentation lots run out, a specific priming gets swapped, and a blender adjusts to keep the profile close rather than identical.
None of this makes a secondary batch a lesser cigar. Plenty of collectors prefer a later batch once a blend has had time to settle. What it does mean is that same name is not the same guarantee as same cigar, and a collection built without tracking OR status against secondary runs is really just guessing with extra steps.
We treat this distinction as basic due diligence, not a selling point. Every release in current rotation gets checked against its documented batch history before it is listed, and if a specific box’s OR-versus-secondary status is not confirmed yet, we say so rather than assume.
